The Cycle of Bullying

Bullying is one of the prominent social problems that is still happening in our world right now, and it became worse when social media enters our lives. Based on Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, bullying is the abuse or mistreatment of someone vulnerable by someone stronger or more powerful.

There are three individuals or groups of people involved in bullying to happen: the bully, the victim, and its watchers or bystanders. Each of them can be part of bullying because of the psychological effects of the things that happened to them or they experienced. Some bullies do have a traumatic experience, and to cope with their trauma, they are being dominant to other people.

But in some cases, bullies don't have to be traumatized, because they adopted many toxic traits and behaviors from their environment, like their own families and friends. Same thing for bystanders. Being neglected by their own family can also be one of the causes of being a bully and a victim of bullying.

The psychological effects of bullying on its victims can be very deep. They can experience depression, anxiety, etc. Bullying can also affect its victims academically, physically, and socially until it lasts into adulthood.

Bullying can also take place on social media, like giving or commenting malicious things to other people. Bullying can ruin someone's life. Bullying can result to suicide.

So let's stop the cycle of bullying. We must not blame the victims, bullies should have a greater environment, and bystanders should not turn blind eye to something like bullying. People, especially the older generation, should influence the younger generation on greater things and better behavior, not to pass on the toxic behaviors that they adopted from the older generation as well. Bullying isn't something to normalize, but a cycle or a chain to break.

END.
